Pada 5 Desember, acara utama untuk Melon Music Awards 2020 (MMA 2020) digelar tanpa penonton karena pembatasan COVID-19. Acara ini juga disiarkan secara langsung.
Di tahun 2020, Melon Music Awards digelar selama empat hari mulai 2 hingga 5 Desember. 10 artis teratas telah diumumkan terlebih dahulu, yakni BTS, BLACKPINK, IZ*ONE, Baekhyun EXO, Im Young Woong, Oh My Girl, Kim Ho Joong, Baek Yerin, Zico, dan IU. Sementara penghargaan untuk kategori Rock, Indie, OST, R&B/Soul, Ballad, serta Rap/Hip-Hop telah diumumkan sebelum acara utama pada 5 Desember.
Dalam dua tahun berturut-turut, BTS membawa pulang seluruh piala Daesang (grand prize) untuk Artist of the Year, Album of the Year (“Map of the Soul: 7”), dan Song of the Year (“Dynamite”).
